In the 1930s, .357 Magnum ammunition was developed in response to Colt’s .38 Super Automatic, then the only US pistol cartridge able to penetrate car covers and emerging ballistic vests. While both .38 Special and .357 Magnum seem different, they share a 0.357-inch bullet diameter. The differences trace back to older .38 cartridges using heeled bullets.
